The Mets signed veteran RHP Ervin Santana to a minor-league deal pending a physical, the team announced Friday.

The Mets signed veteran RHP Ervin Santana to a minor-league deal pending a physical, the team announced Friday. Santana, 36, was granted free agency when the White Sox designated him for assignment in April. He went 0-2 with a 9.45 ERA in three starts. Santana would report to Port St. Lucie, Florida. Over the past two seasons, Santana has only made eight starts, going 0-3 with an 8.53 ERA. He has allowed 36 runs, 50 hits and 15 homers in 38 innings. In his last full season, 2017, Santana was an All-Star, going 16-8 with a 3.28 ERA with the Twins. He is 149-127 with a 4.09 ERA in his 15-year career. Signing Santana comes weeks after the Mets opted not to pursue Gio Gonzalez, who chose to become a free agent once the Yankees didn’t call him up in mid-April. Five days after he was released, he signed a major-league deal with the Brewers, with whom he is 2-1 with a 2.39 ERA in five starts. The Mets, who earlier this season acquired Wilmer Font in a trade with the Rays, are getting more rotation help soon, as Jason Vargas is set to return from a hamstring injury on Saturday. Pete Alonso is having a historic rookie season with the Mets this year, hitting .265/.341/.625 with 19 ...

Measuring The Cost Of Cool In The 2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon

“Sometimes nothing can be a real cool hand,” Paul Newman’s titular character says in Cool Hand Luke. The opposite is true in the 2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon pickup truck: it has just about everything in its quest to be the coolest ride in a long, long time. The return of a Jeep pickup truck after a 28-year hiatus comes at the right time, with the resurgent midsize pickup truck market crowded with compelling offerings, from the return of the Ford Ranger to the reigning Toyota Tacoma. The midsize pickup segment is up 13 percent in the first quarter of 2019 at a time when overall new car sales have cooled. Pickups typically have higher margins, and the Gladiator has already proven to be a money-making machine before it reached dealerships. The cost of cool to be first is significant: The $62,310 Gladiator Launch Edition, which is nearly $30,000 more than the base Sport and $20,000 more than the top-level Rubicon, sold out all 4,190 units in one April day. That number represents the 419 area code in Toledo, Ohio where the Gladiator and Wrangler are built. Those Toledo plants are where the first Willys Civilian Jeeps (CJ) were built in the 40s following World War II. True to its root...

Celebrities Who Do Hot Yoga Share Benefits, Why They Love It

Hot yoga is having a hot moment in Hollywood! Whenever celebrities reveal the secrets to their beach bodies, it seems that the vigorous group class is often at the top of the list. Hailey Bieber, Jordin Sparks and Queer Eye’s Antoni Porowski have all told Us Weekly they do the stretch sessions as a regular part of their fitness regimens — and there are plenty more stars in the same wellness boat. There are various forms of hot yoga — most notably Bikram yoga — but they all have one thing in common: a heated room. In a hot yoga class, the temperature is usually brought up to over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Some of the benefits: Higher temperatures encourage deeper stretching, more flexibility and plenty of sweat. “I like hot yoga, because obviously it feels great to sweat,” Jennifer Aniston and Kate Beckinsale’s yoga guru Mandy Ingber has told Us Weekly. She warns it’s not for everyone, including people who are pregnant or have heart problems, but the sweating aspect is ideal. “That’s actually a tip. Sweat five times a week,” she added. “If it’s not through exercise, then definitely a sauna or something, but definitely sweating is important. For that, hot yoga is amazing. I think it...

(CNN) – On Sunday, CNN Digital released a special report called “Slavery’s Last Stronghold.” It focuses

(CNN) – On Sunday, CNN Digital released a special report called “Slavery’s Last Stronghold.” It focuses on current-day slavery in Mauritania, a West African country where an estimated 10% to 20% of people are enslaved. In 1981, Mauritania became the last country in the world to abolish slavery. It didn’t make owning a person a crime until 2007. Work on this story started 11 months ago, after we stumbled upon a few of those statistics. As part of  The CNN Freedom Project, a multi-year effort to report on modern slavery, we began talking with anti-slavery organizations and government workers who deal with Mauritania in hopes that we could get a sense of what life is like in this place where slavery is so shockingly common. Eventually we found SOS Slaves, an abolitionist group in Mauritania that was founded by a former slave owner and a man whose family was enslaved. Think about that for a second: A slave and a slave owner came together to start an organization that is now trying to liberate people in a place where slavery is arguably more intractable and more common than anywhere else on Earth. It’s such a powerful symbol of hope, cooperation an...

Odourless Urinals in Hyderabad Will Convert our Waste Into Bio-Fertilisers!

How many times have you walked past the urinals at a metro station, or any other railway station, and grimaced or covered your nose due to the terrible odour? As reported by the New Indian Express, three odourless urinals, which convert urine into biofertilizer, have been set up at the Miyapur Metro Station, on an experimental basis. The total cost for setting up these three urinals was Rs 3 lakh. Others, at Kukatpally, JNTU and Rasoolpura Metro stations have been operational as well. Now, the Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMRL) authorities, are planning to install this facility at the other stations in the city. A process is in place that separates the water and breaks down the ammonia and urea components of urine. The urine is converted into safe water, which is directed to a soak pit through a channel. This odourless water can be used for plants. The urine is collected in an anaerobic digester, where, in the absence of air, anaerobic microbes degrade the urine, reduce stickiness and dissolve the solids. The urine then enters the activated carbon filter, followed by a biofilter. The ammoniacal nitrogen in the system is broken by a microbial strain, in which ammonia and nitrogen are se...

Other forms of gravity-type VA meters may incorporate a piston or vane that responds to flow

Other forms of gravity-type VA meters may incorporate a piston or vane that responds to flow in a manner similar to the float’s behavior. All these devices can be used to measure the flow rates of most liquids, gases, and steam. There are also similar types that balance the fluid flow with a spring rather than gravitational force. These do not require vertical mounting, but corrosive or erosive fluids can damage the spring and lead to reduced accuracy. The term rotameter derives from early versions of the floats, which had slots to help stabilize and center them and which caused them to rotate. Today’s floats take a variety of shapes, including a spherical configuration used primarily in purgemeters (which will be discussed later on). The materials of construction include stainless steel, glass, metal, and plastic. The tapered tube’s gradually increasing diameter provides a related increase in the annular area around the float, and is designed in accordance with the basic equation for volumetric flow rate: With h being constant in a VA meter, we have A as a direct function of flow rate Q. Thus, the rotameter designer can determine the tube taper so that the hei...

The most natural way to feed your baby often does not come naturally

As natural as breastfeeding is, sometimes we can be a little confused on what to expect or what that journey will look like for us. Although people are making progress on their attitude toward public and workplace breastfeeding, there’s still a stigma around it. Celebrity moms have been more open about their breastfeeding struggles and stories, whether it’s pumping during a photoshoot, not being able to supply enough milk or just choosing to stop because of pain. According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 80 per cent of mothers breastfeed, but there’s still a lot that surprises new moms about the whole process. Some people might think breastfeeding just happens naturally. The baby latches on and there you go! But that’s not necessarily the case. “New mothers assume breastfeeding is autonomous and automatic,” says Stacy Davis, the executive director of the National Association of Professional and Peer Lactation Supporters of Color Partners. “Breastfeeding is like riding a bike or learning to read. There’s a process, and within that process are the occasional setbacks until the skill is mastered.” Every mother has...

All 2,493 items targeted by China’s tariffs in US trade war — Quartz

China’s latest tariff retaliation, announced today, will hit some $60 billion in US exports, including hundreds of agricultural, mining, and manufactured products, threatening jobs and profits at companies around the United States.  Before the trade war starts in earnest, China bought about 17% of US agricultural exports and was a major market for other goods, from Maine lobster to Boeing aircraft. It has been the largest market for Apple iPhones since 2016. Since the escalation of tariffs, though, China has stopped buying soybeans and lobsters, and Apple warned it would miss its expected Christmas holiday sales figures because of trade tensions. In addition to the 25% tariffs below, Beijing also added 20% tariffs on 1,078 US products, 10% tariffs on 974 US products, and 5% tariffs on 595 US products (all links in Chinese). The list was translated from China’s ministry of finance press release using Google translate, and may be inexact in spots. Quartz also rearranged some items on the list to group them into categories, and they may not be in the order of their “harmonized tariff schedule” codes.  Wedge Anchor, Hex Nut, Truss Head Self Drilling Screw – Shuangzi,https://w...
