The company, one of the biggest British high street retailers, today (30 October) said its ambition is to "become the figurehead for sustainability within the UK high street" by 2023.

In an update alongside its latest sustainability report, the company outlined a number of sustainability improvements it is making for its spring/summer 20 collections. These include: over 50% of Monsoon clothing to be sustainable; 70% of all cotton used to be organic; the launch of a 90% sustainable beachwear collection; over 65% viscose will be used; and 65% of children's beach products will be sustainable.

Other commitments are that 70% of all Monsoon's jersey pieces will be sustainable, and 50% of polyester used in Monsoon's knitwear will be recycled. The company is also keen to use more sustainable materials in its denim.

"Ethical production has always been at the heart of Monsoon and, as we move forward, we want the sustainability of our products to become an integral part of our brand DNA," says head of design Caroline Jackson.

"We are currently driving an internal revolution to implement impactful changes. We are proud of the progress we have made so far. By 2023, we want to become the figurehead for sustainability within the UK high street and we are very much looking forward to achieving that goal."

The company launched S.E.W in spring/summer 19, a 100% sustainable range, using responsibly sourced organic cotton and Lenzing Ecovero, a planet-friendly alternative to viscose, and denim with a reduced environmental impact in jackets and jeans, as well as trend-led midi dresses and tops in all-natural cotton.

Monsoon also encourages customers to donate clothes with the incentive of money off for their next purchase, in the hope to prevent unwanted clothes going to landfills.
